MARGINALIA

Location: Koppel Collective 157 Regent's Park Rd, Chalk Farm, London NW1 8BB

3rd June - 7th June 2026

Marginalia brought together a group of artists whose practices intersected around the overlooked, fragmentary, and peripheral. The term marginalia traditionally referred to notes or marks made in the margins of a text; however, in this context, it was expanded beyond these confines and into the visual landscape. It denoted the sketches, studies, and side thoughts that often remained unseen: works that existed on the edge of an artist’s practice, yet held a quiet significance. By repositioning these marginal works as complete and resolved in their own right, the intimacy and immediacy of process were unravelled. It was often within the intimacy of an artist’s periphery that a truth was contained, one that the final work obscured. By showcasing these smaller works, Marginalia invited viewers to consider the value of the unfinished, incidental, and peripheral as points of authenticity and reflection.

The participating artists each brought a distinct sensibility to the exhibition. Their practices spanned painting, printmaking, and drawing, yet all shared a deep engagement with material, process, and observation.

The exhibition was concerned with finding meaning in the traces left along the way in artistic practices and processes. It asked how we might look differently at what was often deemed secondary in the studio: the drawings, studies, and experiments that accumulated around a practice.

These works formed an archive of marginal thoughts that, when gathered together, proposed an alternative way of seeing: one that chose intimacy over the monumental and invited viewers to slow down, to look closely, and to find significance in the margins.
